Although Frank Costello’s approach is not something we would recommend or promote, this statement reminds us that it is possible to change the “rules of the game”. Our environment, understood as an amalgam of physical, psychological and sensorial objects, including everything from language to space, could be transformed to go beyond the offers of the mass market and its institutionalised consuming patterns.
It should come as no surprise then, that the word “object” has its Latin root in the word “obiectus”, meaning “obstacle”. Not only because an object can physically obstruct, but because objects, given the time, turn into substitutes for the very thing that they represent. They become cultural obstacles mediating our experience and understanding of the world.
Arranged in six sections, delimited by tapes printed with associated words, Nowhere/Now/Here frames a series of challenging design issues around contemporary life and creativity. These sections have been assembled in order to create moments, images and stories, which enable visitors to find their own point of access into the ideas and the work, to reflect on the rich complexities and constant strangeness of human life.
Ultimately the Exhibition is a space of reflection, where we are encouraged to develop a heightened consciousness of our everyday surroundings. We can choose to exercise our powers of decision and action. We can become “citizen designers”.
